Earth Hour: 2012

By Newsbyrd staff-

The lights first went out in on the last Saturday in March, 2007 in Sydney, Australia while since then the phenomena has spread like a virus to most major cities on the globe.

Today, on the last Saturday in March, 2012 between 8:30 and 9:30pm, the lights will go out again as a show of support for the need to take action on Climate Change. The voluntary event is called “Earth Hour.”

Earth Hour is organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and encourages households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour to support the worthy cause. Earth Hour was conceived by the WWF and the Sydney Morning Herald in 2007, when 2.2 million residents of Sydney participated by turning off all non-essential lights.

Since then it has grown from the Sydney Opera House to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge and from the Auckland Sky Tower to the Coliseum in Rome.
